Tips for Ideal Workwear

Tips for Ideal Workwear

"The joy of dressing is an art", said John Galliano, the famous British fashion designer.

Well, have you ever stopped for a moment from your daily grind, and looked at what your typical workday looks like? Just a rough calculation: 9 hrs at work place + 8 hrs for sleep and balance 7 hrs for food/cleaning/driving/shopping/movies etc etc

Workplace is where most of us spend maximum time in a 24 hour span. We should be dressed for the part which provides us with the identity of what we do. We all want to feel presentable, well turned out, powerful and comfortable!

As Harry Winston, the American Jeweller said: ”People will stare. Make it worth their while."

Make it worth their while by being dressed comfortably but still smartly. Comfort doesn’t mean being sloppy. You should be both and that will keep you productive all day!

Most of us will say its easier said than done! But here are six effective hacks to look good at work and ensure your workwear works for you!

1. Weather Appropriate Workwear: Think of the fabric from the weather point of view. Is the fabric breathable, will it wrinkle, will it make people uncomfortable wearing it. Basically is it weather appropriate?

Top fabric choices for summer usually include cotton, khaki, linen, and poly cotton. Top fabric choices for winter usually include wool, fleece, and cotton.

2. Design as per the Work: Workwear or uniform designs need to be aligned to the kind of work being done. You can’t have a pencil skirt designed for the housekeeping staff. Keep in mind the tasks to be done by the workforce before the design phase. The uniforms should be smart but also functional. And a functional, well designed uniform will instils confidence in the teams that will help elevate performance.

3. Safety: In every industry, safety is always top priority. Uniforms need to be designed with the exact same premise. For a chefs uniform, the fabric cannot have a flammable quality. Similarly the staff at the pool will need a fabric that will dry sooner than most other fabrics. Safety is something that cannot be compromised on at all.

4. Colour: Colour is known to have a psychological effect on the human mind. Blue is supposed to be a calming colour and green depicts peaceful. However there are other aspects that you need to keep in mind while choosing the uniform colours, like the hotel interiors and the brand cooler palette and the surroundings. Hues of blue next to the beach feel like an extension of the waves, and shades of brown in the desert area brings the exterior back in. Colour of the uniforms can have a huge impact on the look and feel of the entire hotel or resort.

5. Comfort: It’s impossible to smile if your feet hurt in uncomfortable shoes, or if the fabric of your clothes still to the body with sweat. Staff that is happy will serve the guests with all their heart with a genuine smile on their face. Comfort matters! Period!

6. Brand Recognition: Workwear and uniforms go a long way to connect your brand to your guests. If you are projecting a hi-end luxury resort, and have the infrastructure and opulence to match it, the uniforms of the employees can’t be left far behind. The employees in their uniforms need to look like they belong in the settings and compliment the look and feel of the property.

Oscar de la Renta, who is well known as one of the couturiers who dressed Jacqueline Kennedy said so aptly: "Being well dressed hasn't much to do with having good clothes. It’s a question of good balance and good common sense."

Until Next Time!
